Diana Chittester’s debut studio album, In This Skin, embraces the roots of folk music while adding an edgy attitude to the genre. Pounding out explosive rhythms and intricate leads, Diana allows her guitar style to headline. Challenging her religiously structured childhood and examining the intimacy of her relationships, Chittester speaks openly about her experiences and their impacts. February 18 - Youngstown - Covelli Centre This country superstar has ignited the genre ever since becoming a finalist on the reality show, Nashville Star, where she finished third but signed to Epic Records. Now on the roster of RCA Records Nashville, Lambert has continued your rise to the top. Photo: Randee St. Nicholas...
Cereal Banter’s “Lights Lights Lights” is one of those albums that are hard to pigeonhole into any genre. It has been described as avant-garde, neo-psychedelic and noise-jazz. The truth is that the dynamic duo of Molly McKay and Joseph Rafidi has created something unique. Songs that begin almost ethereally quickly take surprising turns – sometimes soothing, sometimes jarring but always apparently purposeful. Drums and keyboard are the heart and soul of the music. Rafidi’s drums are furious and unpredictable, and the minimalistic sounds around them allow them to take up room on eac...

By Aaron Smith I’ve been going to Generate, Akron’s only free electronic dance music (EMD) session, almost weekly since the end of the summer. It’s been an absolute blast. Generate brings skilled DJs mixing great tunes, great bartenders and a friendly crowd together from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Wednesday at the Lounge on Paul Williams Street. I got a chance to speak with one of the owners of Soul:R Sound System, Cody Rodgers, who produces Generate. Rodgers stressed that Soul:R Sound System and Generate is devoted to providing a high-quality experience to Akron dance music fans. “Th...
McGuire has been kicking around the music scene for a while now and is pretty well-regarded for his drone and ambient work — namely with his other band, Emeralds, which also features Cleveland heavy hitter Sam Goldberg. “Get Lost” finds McGuire on familiar ground, with ambient loops and effect-heavy guitar melodies. While he does stay true to the sound that he’s known for on this new record, it’s much more focused then previous releases. For fans of the rising chill-wave genre, this record will definitely please. It’s hard to say if the record has more of a zoned-out or sucke...
From the slow opening of “The Worst in Me” to the last few drumbeats in “Praise Feeder,” Like Moths to Flames latest album, “When We Don’t Exist,” is packed with huge breakdowns and monumental choruses. Since their signing to Rise Records, Like Moths to Flames have been on the upswing. Their pushing their live shows, touring as much as possible, and plan on showing the music scene how good they are rather than telling them. “When We Don’t Exist” conjures comparisons to similar bands, like The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria and My Ticket Home. These comparisons a...
November 29 - Cleveland - Peabody's This pop rock act diverges itself from bands of a similar ilk with a harder sound, though they still maintain glimmering guitars and electro breakdowns fans of the genre have come to expect. First formed in 2006, the band has garnered a lot of attention with a number of featured performance on the Warped Tour, SXSW and CMJ Music Conference. Perhaps their crowning achievement is the band's 2009 MTV Video Music Award for Break Out Band In NYC, which as one could imagine would be a pretty stiff competition. The band is still touring off the strength of thei...
November 22 - Cleveland - Beachland Ballroom Sondre Lerche's prolific curiosity didn’t lead him to a new genre so much as introduce a new level of candidness in his work. His eponymous sixth record, released on Mona this summer, has been praised by critics and fans for his advanced melodic instinct, intimate yet refined arrangements and vivid lyricism. The Norwegian-born, Brooklyn-based artist is now taking his show on the road with a solo tour announced for this November. From the gripping cut-to-the-chase opener “Ricochet” to the uber-catchy “Private Caller,” from the naked d...
Every year a slew of records are released and by and large go unnoticed, slipping into the void of the used bin at the local Record Exchange. It’s the nature of the beast, especially in today’s constantly “on” world, where anything is accessible and ultimately expendable. Yet every so often, a record comes out that will define an era or a genre, surpassing its contemporaries and becomes a part of the collective social conscious in a sort of agelessness that is hardly circumstance. Weezer did it with its “Blue Album,” while bands like Nirvana and the Pixies had similar success wi...
Just take those old records off the shelf... Okay, opening this up with some Bob Segar was probably a bad decision however we just made you think of two things; Tom Cruise in tighty-whities and a man named Bob with some epic beardage. That's what we call a WIN WIN in journalism. Let's get down to business here. DJ Robert Rainieri is spinning YOUR VINYL the second Saturday of every month at the Canton's cool kid bar The Conestoga Grill. "I play whatever records people bring in, old, new, any genre the whole night...you should see what types of dusty, funky records people bring in. You...
Still Drinkin’, Still Rockin’ The Unband comes to film Ed. note: This article originally appeared in the first incarnation of Youngstown Pulse sometime between 2003-05. B.J. LISKO Youngstown Pulse Magazine Editor God damnit. I didn’t want to drink tonight. But of course, a night I designate as “recovery,” in a very loose sense, there in the rusty tin box at the end of the driveway is the documentary of The Unband, “We Like To Drink, We Like to Play Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Fuckin’ assholes. Two viewings of this, 12 beers later, and here I am at the computer. I’ve been call...
Black metal is a genre widely accepted in European markets, mostly in Scandanavia, but it has been widely ignored by American audiences. Luckily, this band from Chicago decided to go against the grain when they started up in 2000. By 2004, however, the band turned a corner into more experimental music, which has been described as "blackadelia." This is a band that should be playing to thousands of people, not to one hundred over $1 beers at Now That's Class. An intimate experience not to be missed. ...
With electronic sounds, amazing beats and outstanding vocals, Gang Gang Dance is difficult to place into a genre, if any at all. But there’s something astounding about the band’s sound that makes this concert one to look out for. My money’s on their music popping up in next season’s “Skins” in the U.K. ...
Colin John, an Ohio-born, Memphis-grown musician, made his name playing lead guitar at B.B. King’s Beale Street club, backing the likes of Hank Ballard and Pinetop Perkins. The Colin John Band takes blues, funk, soul and rock and twists them all into a self-proclaimed genre of “x-treme blues.” ...
These Midwestern boys build laid-back music around their lyrics about not having friends, getting fat and all things alt rock. The sometimes-acoustic, sometimes-full band ensemble spans the spectrum of the genre, but either way the songs are inviting. ...
Guitar phenom Neil Zaza can play just about any genre you can name, and blends classical with rock in his virtuosic neoclassical stylings. The Northeast Ohio native is coming to the Kent Stage to kick off his “212” tour on April 15. Buzzbin caught up with him to talk about musical muses, being in the studio with Ripper Owens and why he’s huge in Asia. How did you first get into music? I have always loved music. It’s been a big part of my life. I know that anyone else, any musician might say that, but for me, I’ve always been drawn to the guitar. I thought it was coolest instrum...
The Akron deathcore band Ichabod Crane is releasing their second album, “Brimstone”, on April 23 at the Musica in Akron. Brimstone still follows the “Grunt, scream, growl, guitar breakdown, repeat” structure that most deathcore bands follow these days. The difference between them and other deathcore bands is that they actually put some rhythm and complexity into their drumming and guitarwork. Instead of simply being the vocal gap, the breakdowns are enjoyable and they blend well with the song. They also throw in a wicked guitar solo in most of their songs, which is actually pretty r...
By Julia Kazar Musician David Gerrard has been making music for over thirty year now, an acoustic guitar player Gerrard combines his musical influences with his own personal take on folk music and ends up with a classic folk sound updated for the twenty-first century. Gerrard’s shows usually consist mostly of covers of others music, but he is constantly working on music of his own and implementing it into the show when he thinks it will fit in. But make no mistake about it David Gerrard is by no means just a cover artist, he is as dedicated to his own music as he is to recreating songs d...
