Despite only being together for a relatively short time, Massillon's First and Thorne have made some major waves in the regional music scene with their aggressive indie rock stylings. Comprised of Sean McGonagle (guitar/lead vocals), Phil Bregy (bass/vocals), Christian Bochkor (drums/vocals), Ryan White (lead guitar/vocals), the group originally formed through a chance meeting. “It kind of was like fated man,” McGonagle said. “I broke up with this girl and I started going to this garage to party, and there were musicians there and we just jammed.” He went on to explain that thoug...
Album Name: We Own The Sun Composer: The Heights Band Record Label: None (n/a) Akron's The Heights Band play a grungy stoner rock through and through. Led Zepplin influenced guitar riffs drone through bluesly wailing vocals. Tempo changes occur with wild abandon as new riffs topple predecessors. Despite the massive tones the band manages to steer clear of well-worn trappings of bands in the genre, opting to let classic rock riffs and tasteful solos work as bridges. Just as you feel like you have a grip on what the band is about with the first two tracks in the record, they go into ...
With a blow of the didgeridoo and a bit of guitar, Welcome to Aliver Hall catches your attention from the opening track. You can’t help but expect something amazing from these guys with an opening like that. Aliver Hall is a jam band out of Akron that specializes in the sort of rock that you’d love to drink a beer and chillax to. From the track “Caged” which provides a nice little summery, “sway your hips and sing along” sort of feel to the IWBH jam sessions, this album is interesting to say the least. Lead singer Alex Hall’s lyrics are something that really kept me going ...
Right from track one, you’ll be hooked on Tyrohill’s “You Drink and You Smoke Too Much.” The six-track EP leads off with the catchy “Feel It.” A tangy guitar riff starts off the song – you know, that riff that you catch yourself tapping along to days later. Thirty seconds in, and you’re hit with the smooth vocals of Andrew Saltzman. “And I know that it’s time to go. And I’m falling back from what I used to know,” he croons with a sense of authority. Each track leads into the other, with folky interludes and long, exaggerated instrumentals. I’m a lyrically driven gi...
Akron rapper Burudi’s newest release “Based on a True Story” is half sweaty, lusty pseudo-urbano club songs and half pissed off, cocked-and-loaded midwestern gangster rap.The first three songs on the album are the aforementioned club songs. They aren’t very catchy and they’re pretty forgettable, using tantalizingly sexy female vocals between Burudi spouting flirtatious lyrics in possibly the most apathetic, out-of-breath tone used in a dance song about loving women. “Passport”, however, is different. It has an awesome hard NRG beat behind it, glitchy vocal effects and Right...
By Hack Harbinger All right, picture this: You’re on the road, window down, volume up, tapping your foot, banging your steering wheel. Got the picture? That’s Mugshot, a three-piece band that hails from the Rubber City. If you like your music to bounce back at you, check out their self-titled new album. The opening track, “Not a Word,” is a Queens of the Stone Age-inspired heavy hitter. “Mama Said” keeps things going, and by the way LL, this will knock you out. My favorite, the radio friendly “Innocent Princess” slows things down a little with Derrick Adkins sounding a l...
