On Saturday, April 14, at Public Hall in downtown Cleveland, the 27th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place. The tradition began with inductees like Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley and Ohio’s own Alan Freed. Here’s a rundown of some of this year’s class. GUNS N’ ROSES - 1987 was the year of Prozac, “The Simpsons” and Guns N’ Roses’ debut LP “Appetite for Destruction.” Before airwaves buzzed with “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Paradise City,” GNR was just another hair band trying to make it in L.A.’s clu...
There's a number of preconceived notions surrounding Guns N' Roses' front man Axl Rose: Mainly that he's a prima donna and his live shows are lackluster and trapped in the shadows of the band's glory days. However, no one has seemed to have told him any of these things as he thoroughly impressed the crowd at the Covelli Center in Youngstown Wednesday night. The show was opened by heavy metal juggernauts Black Label Society, who pounded and thrashed their way through a raucous set, complete with an extended guitar solo by front man Zakk Wylde. The heavy sonic jams only whet the audiences' ap...
Discordia is one of those acts that you only ever hear about, that you don’t understand until you see it happen. Composed of four attractive females with a fire fetish, Discordia’s act is a mixture of fire-breathing and eating, grind sets and cabaret. The group was put together by Rae Gentry and Cheryl Bergenstein as a way to show off their talents while bringing something unique to the table. As they developed their act, they brought in Chelsea Mueller and Jessica Stitchedupdoll (at least, that’s how she’s listed on Facebook) to round out the group. The girls all have artistic b...
Punk icons the Misfits return with their long-awaited, first full-length release of all-new, original material in nearly a decade. Rooted in the horror and sci-fi themes their audience craves, The Devil’s Rain will be released October 4th on Misfits Records. It was produced by Ed Stasium, who’s credits include the Ramones’ Road to Ruin and Too Tough to Die, as well as the Misfits’ 1999 release Famous Monsters. The Devil’s Rain showcases a jaw-dropping, two-panel front/back cover painting featuring the rebirth of the band’s iconic “Fiend” mascot in an epic setting rendered by...
Bullet Boys is another one of those great '80s-'90s-era sleaze bands that continues to forge ahead, playing sexy glam rock without apology. Current and former members are alumni of little bands like Ratt, Alice Cooper, WASP and Guns n' Roses so you know this is going to be off the hook. Be there. 8/28 Ripper Owens • Akron ...
Sleaze rock legends Faster Pussycat hit the stage Sunday, June 12th at 6pm at Akron's Ripper Owens Tap House. Buzzbin recently caught up with lead singer Taime Downe to talk about the show and what's coming up for FP. To many, glam metal defined their lives, fashion and opinions in the late '80s and early '90s. Teased-out mullets, tight stone-washed jeans, too much whiskey and cigarettes, penicillin- these all made regular appearances on the scene, which centered around the music emerging from LA's Sunset Strip. The almost mythical heart of the Sunset Strip was the Cathouse, a converted dis...
Dizzy Whore is a sleaze metal band from Youngstown that is trying to bring back classic 80’s hard rock and judging by their debut album, the Desperate Side of Rock and Roll, they’re off to a great start. Despite playing a style of music that lost its popularity in the early 90’s, they do a good job of making their music sound pretty current. However, they’ll appeal to fans of 80’s metal more so than fans of modern rock. There are a decent variety of songs on the album but it sticks to typical sleaze metal song categories. The rock anthem, “The Desperate Side of Rock and Rol...
