Cereal Banter’s “Lights Lights Lights” is one of those albums that are hard to pigeonhole into any genre. It has been described as avant-garde, neo-psychedelic and noise-jazz. The truth is that the dynamic duo of Molly McKay and Joseph Rafidi has created something unique. Songs that begin almost ethereally quickly take surprising turns – sometimes soothing, sometimes jarring but always apparently purposeful. Drums and keyboard are the heart and soul of the music. Rafidi’s drums are furious and unpredictable, and the minimalistic sounds around them allow them to take up room on eac...
Nashville Pussy- Friday, November 11th at 8pm (with Supersucks / Whiskey Daredevils) Tickets- $15 in advance / $17 day of show "True rock n’ roll doesn’t require definition. It’s self-explanatory based on a gut feeling and the unconditional devotion to the musical genre. Nashville Pussy have celebrated their brand of genuine rock n’ roll for more than a decade, in classic style at times, surprising at others, but always earthy, raw and unadulterated. Band mastermind Blaine Cartwright (vocals, guitar), his wife Ruyter Suys (guitar), Karen Cuda (bass) and Jeremy Thompson (drums) po...
If you’re a fan of musicals, you know the greats: “All That Jazz.” “Chicago.” “Phantom of the Opera.” “Evil Dead.” Yep, “Evil Dead: The Musical” is the first film ever to spawn its own musical production. And little wonder: The film series has become a cult classic among horror hounds and independent film aficionados alike. In August of 2003 in the back room of a small bar in Toronto called the Tranzac Club, “Evil Dead: The Musical” came to fruition. Over the past eight years, productions have sprung up across the world, including in Seoul, Tokyo, Calgary, Californ...
Michael McFarland has spent his entire life living in and around Kent not to mention spending the last decade playing and performing music throughout northeast Ohio. McFarland is a local boy that is sure to make waves with his first EP, "Made a Mess." With catchy and personal lyrics like that of a poet, McFarland’s music seems as if he is pouring his heart and soul out for all to hear. Written, recorded & produced over a period of 5 days last Autumn, "Made a Mess" has already garnered a handful of critical praise and is sure to make even more of a splash as time progresses. McFarl...
The Jonas Brothers are from the shore region of New Jersey. So, in effect, the Jonas Brothers are from the Jersey Shore. Its alllll starting to make sense...not really. Tues, Aug 31st, at the Quicken Loan Arena in Cleveland, thousands of young girls will gather to worship at the feet of the Jonas Brothers, three. Joe, Nick and Kevin are the JB and they’ve slowly been separating a generation of tweens from their disposable income with albums, t-shirts and movies. The latest album Lines, Vines and Trying Times debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, selling a quarter of a million cd’s ju...
By: Julia Kazar Thursday night kicked off the Brackish Water Band’s summer tour. The first stop for the country/ bluegrass band was Annabell’s in Akron. They played a two hour set upstairs in the lounge that was full of foot-tapping and good times. It was a show filled to the brim with southern voices as well as sounds, and it was perfect for a summer night. If you’ve ever been to Annabell’s you know just how small the stage is upstairs, now imagine trying to squeeze four musicians and their instruments on the stage. It’s not exactly very roomy but if the Brackish Water...
By Julia Kazar On December 25th 2006 America lost The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, but you can still hear his music, as well as the music of other R&B and soul musicians of the 70’s and 80’s, performed live. On Saturday, July 3rd, at The Northside Bar and Grille in Akron Get On Up, a tribute band, will be performing the soul singers greatest hits. As if singing Brown’s hits wasn’t enough the band also tackles other classic acts including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Earth Wind & Fire just to name a few. So, no matter what kind of funk and soul music Get On Up decides to...
