Over the last 20 years, Clutch has bred a cult following most artists would give their left arm for. Alternatively described as a punk band, a jam band, a stoner rock band and a metal band, their discography proves that they are all that and more. Clutch is made up of Neil Fallon (vocals, guitar), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass) and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). Though they have nine studio albums and a selection of live albums, EPs and B-side compilations, they maintain their fan loyalty through a steady touring schedule with a variety of accompanying acts. The band has its roots in Ma...

Rootwire is an anti-establishment, livetronica festival in Kaeppner’s Woods in Logan, Ohio. Void of cheesy headliners and big corporate sponsorship, the fest shows what people can do when they pool resources towards a common goal. This year the festival will host over 50 musical acts on three stages, plus a silent disco stage, a live-art circus tent and over 50 visual artists. The festival, now in its second year, is more than just art and music: It also features performers from varied fields like hooping and poi performers, who perform in front of the stages on raised platforms as part of t...

With a blow of the didgeridoo and a bit of guitar, Welcome to Aliver Hall catches your attention from the opening track. You can’t help but expect something amazing from these guys with an opening like that. Aliver Hall is a jam band out of Akron that specializes in the sort of rock that you’d love to drink a beer and chillax to. From the track “Caged” which provides a nice little summery, “sway your hips and sing along” sort of feel to the IWBH jam sessions, this album is interesting to say the least. Lead singer Alex Hall’s lyrics are something that really kept me going ...

This Akron trio plays a laid back blues with a heavy does of jam band ethics. Though they claim that they aren't jamming aimlessly, but spinning their own delicious web of soulfully eclectic, jazz-infused, progressive blues, Guitarist Dave Hammer and bassists Matt DeRubertis met in a Jazz guitar theory class at the University of Akron. They both realized they were outcasts from the Jazz heads that surrounded them, inevitable pairing the two. Chris Baker later joined the band on drums and now you know the REST of the story. ...

Akron’s Mo Mojo plays Zydeco, a form of Southern folk characterized by the heavy use of accordion and washboard. It’s a lot like Creole, but more uptempo with a bit of jam-band ethics. The band has a revolving lineup, but usually performs as an eight-piece. ...

Right from track one, you’ll be hooked on Tyrohill’s “You Drink and You Smoke Too Much.” The six-track EP leads off with the catchy “Feel It.” A tangy guitar riff starts off the song – you know, that riff that you catch yourself tapping along to days later. Thirty seconds in, and you’re hit with the smooth vocals of Andrew Saltzman. “And I know that it’s time to go. And I’m falling back from what I used to know,” he croons with a sense of authority. Each track leads into the other, with folky interludes and long, exaggerated instrumentals. I’m a lyrically driven gi...

The League of Proper Musicians Self Titled Who wouldn’t like a jam band with a little bit of wit? Although they describe themselves as a fusion of funk, rock, Latin and progressive music, the Cleveland/Akron/Canton natives self-titled new album, The League of Proper Musicians, sounds like a jam band. Their funky, bouncy ditties are easy to listen to and appreciate. You can almost imagine dancing to their bass and percussion-heavy music with the sun shining above you. It’s worth a mention that the Proper Musicians strike a nice balance between their jam band feeling and their ...
