By: Julia Kazar Indie pop group Miniature Tigers is coming to Musica in Akron on Wednesday August 11th. Formed just a few short years ago, Miniature Tigers are quickly making a name for themselves. In 2006, Rolling Stone Magazine named the band “one of the 25 best bands on MySpace” and their first two EPs, White Magic and Black Magic, both received four stars from Death + Taxes, an indie music magazine. The band has since released two new full length albums; Tell it to the Volcano, which was released in the fall of 2008, and Fortress, which was released this summer. Fortres...
By: Julia Kazar Thursday night kicked off the Brackish Water Band’s summer tour. The first stop for the country/ bluegrass band was Annabell’s in Akron. They played a two hour set upstairs in the lounge that was full of foot-tapping and good times. It was a show filled to the brim with southern voices as well as sounds, and it was perfect for a summer night. If you’ve ever been to Annabell’s you know just how small the stage is upstairs, now imagine trying to squeeze four musicians and their instruments on the stage. It’s not exactly very roomy but if the Brackish Water...
By: Julia Kazar Events to raise money for cancer prevention and awareness are everywhere these days, but few are as creative as The Celtic Club’s “Bras Across the Crooked River” event. The event will take place on Saturday, September 11th from noon until 9 p.m. at Home Savings Bank Plaza in downtown Kent as part of the Kent Irish Festival. The day of the event, bras that have been donated will be stretched all the way across the river in a powerful statement about breast cancer. Currently they have about 320 donated bras and they need at least 500 for this to be a success; with...
By: Julia Kazar Like some twang with your crunch? With a little bit of country and a little bit of rock the Brackish Water Band is heading to Annabell’s in Akron on Thursday August 5th. They will be performing on the upstairs stage. The band is ready to rock your face Hank Williams style, or something like that. Needless to say their going to have some fun and we're going to wear ten gallon hats. Ten years ago, The Brackish Water Band formed out of the hills of Washington (state). Over the years the band has evolved into the good time country powerhouse they are today. See th...
By: Julia Kazar Shmalex, Joshy and Rawrb!, the members of the fun loving humorcore band Psychostick, are getting ready to wrap up their summer tour, but not before a stop at The Carriage House in Louisville. The concert takes place this Saturday, July 31st. Opening for the band is Look What I Did, a hardcore metal band from Nashville. Get ready for a night of head banging and eardrum shattering music. About a month ago I had the chance to talk to Rawrb! aka Rob Kersey, the band's lead vocalist, about the tour and what Psychostick is currently working on. “We recently releas...
By: Julia Kazar The Goo Goo Dolls are getting ready to release their ninth studio album, which should be available by the end of August. If you don’t want to wait that long to hear some new music from the band, you can download Waiting for the Rest of It from their website, or pick up the five song EP at one of their concerts this summer. Aptly titled, Waiting for the Rest of It is a preview of their album containing four new songs and a live version of their 1998 smash hit “Broadway.” The live version still sounds just as incredible as the original. The first single off th...
By: Julia Kazar On Saturday night, Barberton's The Heights Band took the stage at The Backstage Concert Club in Akron for an amazing show. According to their Facebook page, their motto is “rocking hard and loud” and they definitely lived up to it that night. Before The Heights Band took the stage Tweaktronic and the Woovs both played, getting the crowd pumped up for the headliners to take the stage. Made up of brothers Ryan and Dustin Dockery, Kyle Finley and Richie Levers, THB looks like a bunch of guys you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of, but in reality they are som...

By Julia Kazar On Saturday, Thirteenth Floor, Massillon's first independent art gallery, celebrated its grand opening to rave reviews. Everyone who came out enjoyed themselves and had wonderful things to say about the new gallery. The gallery features art from several up and coming local artists, some as young as 19 years old. The art is an eclectic collection that doesn’t really seem to have any rhyme or reason to it, but that’s okay, because it all works well together. From simple sketches to elaborate paintings of people and cartoon characters, all the art on display is incr...

The show promises to be, as all of Petty’s shows are, incredible. This is one show you don’t want to miss. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are touring this summer in support of their newest album, Mojo, which was released June 15th to mixed reviews. While there are definitely some great aspects to the album, it doesn’t sound like the Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker...
By: Julia Kazar If you were lucky enough to be at the Clay’s Park Rock N' Resort Music Festival on Saturday then you know just how incredible the Theory Of A Deadman show was. After a full day of tribute and original rock bands, and Hoobastank, the crowd at Clay’s Park was in the mood to rock. Saturday was the second day of rock music, sun and beer drinking for many members of the audience, but if they were tired in any way, they didn’t show it. The show was packed with energy, both from the band and the crowd. The sun had set and it had cooled off a little bit by 9:30 wh...
By Julia Kazar Tom Petty got it right when he said the waiting is the hardest part. And whether you’re waiting to go out and perform a concert to thousands of people like Petty was singing about or you’re just waiting to get your lip pierced, truer words have never been spoken. Piercings are becoming more and more popular all the time and with so many different options, they are a way not only to express yourself but also to show off your creativity. Art Bomb Tattoos in downtown Massillon offers more than just tattoos, they have one of the largest selections of stones and jewelr...

By Julia Kazar On Saturday night, the NEO (Northeast Ohio) Roller Derby girls took on the Skee Town Skirtz and Motor City's Disassembly Line in a double header bout. Things weren’t looking too good after NEO's Audio Assault lost the first bout to Skee Town, but the NEO Rock'n'Rollergirls pulled together and pulled off a huge win over Detroit in the second bout; with a final score of 156-79. Everyone who came out to support the girls was a huge help, cheering them on to a victory. If you missed this one though don’t worry there are still a few more bouts coming up this seaso...

The tour makes its way to Northeast Ohio early next week with a show at Conton’s Old Glory on Monday night. Also playing that night are Co-Pilot and General Riot. By: Julia Kazar On Thursday night David Gerrard played an intimate show upstairs at Annabell’s in Akron. It was nice to have such a small show because it allowed Gerrard to personally interact with everyone in the audience. He not only took requests from them, but he also was able to carry on conversations with them and make them feel like they were part of the show. Throughout the night Gerrard played a number of different songs, most of them were covers of other artists’ original songs but he did throw in a few that he had written himself too. Between songs he took the time to intr...
By Julia Kazar Summer is in full swing and you should get out there and take advantage of it now, because before you know it it’s going to be fall and the weather will be cold and rainy once again. There are tons of things to do outside in sunny summer weather, but one of the most fun, and cheapest, can be just taking a walk on one of the many hiking and jogging trails in the Akron Canton area, and hey it’s good for you too. The Towpath is one of Ohio’s best known hiking trails. It stretches from Cleveland all the way down to Dover Ohio, a distance of a little over 100 miles. The...
