How to describe “Everything is Alive”? Adult alternative and pop come to mind. Influences as diverse as Death Cab for Cutie, Mazzy Star, R.E.M. and the Psychedelic Furs are easy to spot. That said, like pomegranate seeds, this album is more sour than sweet. Joey Cook, sultry and tough at once, reminded me of both the Riot Grrrl and Lilith Fair schools of female rockers. The atheistic “Desert Hymn” and accusing “Late Night Television” are the most consistent tracks; the rest create cognitive dissonance with the upbeat instrumentals and the bitter vocals.
