Let’s be frank: tattoos are just another form of art. Massillon’s Art Bomb Tattoos once again is reminding everyone of that by hosting the Classy and Sassy show, featuring work by artist Whitney Garey. Art Bomb has been tattooing and piercing since 2003, having moved to Massillon in 2008. For the past four years, they have featured local artists on their walls and regularly host shows for local work. If the name Whitney Garey sounds familiar, you’ve probably seen her pieces at Thirteenth Floor last summer — where Art Bomb first came across her. Garey’s art will be gracing the...

A circus theme will prevail, but performances and artwork are not required to relat...

Massillon’s most creepily cool art gallery will be moving to a new location soon. On Saturday, April 28, you can check out Thirteenth Floor’s new digs on Erie Street at the grand reopening soiree. This week, fans of the gallery’s macabre style and locally mined selections will be stopping by the old storefront (located at 28 Charles Street) for a moving sale, scheduled to run March 28 through 30. Original artwork and prints, posters, shirts, sculptures, masks — even more utilitarian items like store fixtures and tables will be up for grabs. Following the sale, the gallery, run by...

Local artists Ron Copeland and Dave Desimone have been to cities like Buffalo, NY; Pittsburgh; Youngstown; Akron; Gary, Ind.; Detroit and Flint, Mich., all of which have endured the hardships of job loss, population decline and urban decay. It’s a pattern they know well. “When I was about nine years old, I witness the collapse of the steel industry … The once prosperous steel valley region deteriorated and rusted away with it tens of thousands of good paying jobs and a way of life for so many people,” Desimone said. Growing up around boarded-up houses and buildings, he realized and ...

So Buzzbin cartoonist/beer reviewer and all-around-swell-guy Ryan Lynn decided to start pitting local artists against each other in a timed battle that is judged by local celebrities and involves heavy drink. What's not to like? Despite the fact that one of the artists nearly caught the bar on fire during his last performance, the venue is still allowing him back to compete in the Final Event. ...

It wasn’t too long ago that the Collinwood neighborhood was considered a good place to become the victim of a strong-arm robbery. The streets were largely deserted after sundown. Beyond the lights of the Beachland Ballroom, nightlife was nil. But an enterprising group of artists, musicians and entrepreneurs saw potential in the rough-looking neighborhood. Soon new shops, galleries, restaurants and bars began springing up, mostly around the Beachland and specifically along Waterloo Road. The Collinwood neighborhood became a magnet for those looking for a place to claim their own, away...

Over the past few years, we’ve written quite a few features and interviews about the amazing artists, galleries and venues in Northeast Ohio. And while the articles have (hopefully) offered insightful views into the sometimes peculiar, always entertaining minds and methods of these hardworking individuals, we felt as though it might be about time that we started pulling our own weight a bit. Beginning, well, now, we’re going to be doing some down-and-dirty, roll-up-your-sleeves-and-slap-on-a-smock interviews where — you guessed it — we work alongside local artists while they g...

Ever try to use canned food in place of your legos as a kid? Well, a handful of local artists, architects, contractors, companies and engineers have done just that to create work for CANstruction. Six teams are using 16,000 cans to create six unique designs including a VW bus, a ballpark mascot and a spiral. All cans will then be donated to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Build day occurred earlier this week at We Galley on 20 N. High Street in Akron. The Akron ArtWalk will take place this Saturday between 5-7pm and will make a stop at the location. The exhibit is free and open to the p...

“Cellar Door Records Volume III” Eight years ago, a small coffee shop in Madison, Ohio opened its doors, hoping to give local bands a place to play. Cellar Door Coffee had a 135-person capacity and two visionaries at the helm: college students and musicians Justin Markert and Rick Fike, who wanted to bring the electricity of local music to their small town. Since then, Cellar Door has attracted the likes of Oh My God, The Detachment Kit, Hero Pattern, The Heavenly States, Xela and The Pink Spiders. Their coffee shop had an organic vibe that could encompass whatever act caught their e...

The Chinese general Sun Tzu earned his legendary reputation writing about the art of war. But for the next few months in downtown Massillon, new legends will be forged in a war of art. The Massillon Art Battles, judged in part by Buzzbin Magazine, pit two local artists against one another in a live art-making showdown, with the winner advancing to semifinal and final rounds. The first battle took place January 26 at Bender’s in downtown Massillon, when local talents Bili Kribbs and Scott Alan Evans threw down their berets before a packed house and matched brushes for an hour. The artis...

By Anne M. Snyder The Red Light is located upstairs from the Northside Bar and Grille, in the same block as Luigi’s. Other galleries and studios line the district, which is also home to Chrissie Hynde’s Vegiterranean restaurant.  It’s curated by Bernadette Glorioso, assisted by photographer Jody Hawk. In addition to managing the gallery, Glorioso and Hawk are artists in their own right.
