The mighty warlords of Crom helm a warship of doom and set forth on a conquest to pillage and devour everything in their path. Instead of riding steeds, these beer-swilling potheads sit atop roaring Kenworth semis and massive combine tractors. They’ve come for your women, your beer and all of your weed. Sound like a bizarre sci-fi epic? It’s not. It’s Canton’s very own soothsayers of doom, Son Of Neckbeard, and let me tell you, if you like your music extremely loud, weird and bowel-loosening heavy, these dudes are for you. They’re releasing their debut album February 3 at The Carriag...

Pop-punk is increasingly seen as a formulaic copy of Green Day and Blink 182 covers with rearranged lyrics, but City Lights sets out to prove that wrong with a tightly produced mix that covers all the bases – from the upbeat “Where You Been” to the nostalgic “Please Let Me Know.” The one gripe I have with the album is probably more a sign of my age than a legitimate gripe. The album as a whole feels a little forced and confused, as if they covered all of their bases systematically rather than organically. “Please Let Me Know” gives off the feeling of nostalgia, of time spent a...

(Album Stream) Twenty-two year old Trevor Powers, whose musical venture is called Youth Lagoon, has had a long year. Not because he's been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life - the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living. "Youth Lagoon isn't me." says Powers. "It's merely a part of me. I was in and out of different bands in high school and always tried to define myself by what music I played. I tried to find a sense of meaning by being in a band. But it wasn't until this last year - when I realized I was more tha...

The Depths Nightlife Featuring ex-members of The Devotees, The Depths EP “Nightlife” is a pop/jazz fusion of sorts highlighted by solid vocal melodies, quirky lyrics and a wry wit. It’s only five songs (hence the no number rating at the end which is reserved for full-lengths or 7-songs or longer), but is a good introduction to a band that should mold itself quite well into the, pardon the pun, depths of indie rock bliss. It’s a more melancholy version of Electric Touch, or a more credible version of Plain White T’s, which in this day and age, is much better. When songs go slow and ...

First In Space Geronimo I don’t know why, but somehow there always seems to be some sort of bullshit surrounding First In Space. Maybe I missed something, but I don’t quite see how a band that sounds like the Replacements/Libertine/Tom Petty should be that controversial. Then again it is Youngstown so I regress. “Geronimo” is an outstanding showcase of this Springsteenesque trio. It’s soulful, the lyrics are introspective and the vocals are arguably the best in the area. It’s clean, it’s catchy, it’s chalked full of guitar hooks - it’s as if they’ve taken The Replacements...

The 60’s was a feel-good decade. Free love, drum circles and flower power defined the era. Rock took a new turn down an alley of easy listening, something you could lay in the grass and listen to out of your hippie van stereo. The Buffalo Killers have used this 60’s rock influence in their music, especially in their latest release “3.” “Circle Day” uses trippy, harmonic lyrics saying “Come on baby let down your hair/Have a wild one/Dance to the band ‘til the set is done.” If that isn’t reminiscent of the hippie-era, what is? This music just makes you want to nod your h...

So Rock 'n' Roll has had this reputation of being a bit "not as awesome" as it once was. You know, not enough gutiar solos, subpar lyrics and singing. But Blackout Superstar has been a beacon of bright rocking-ness. Now they're releasing a CD and you'd be stupid to miss out on the real Rock 'n' Roll. 8/20 Rocbar • Cleveland ...

With a blow of the didgeridoo and a bit of guitar, Welcome to Aliver Hall catches your attention from the opening track. You can’t help but expect something amazing from these guys with an opening like that. Aliver Hall is a jam band out of Akron that specializes in the sort of rock that you’d love to drink a beer and chillax to. From the track “Caged” which provides a nice little summery, “sway your hips and sing along” sort of feel to the IWBH jam sessions, this album is interesting to say the least. Lead singer Alex Hall’s lyrics are something that really kept me going ...
