Arts for Alzheimer’s Promotes Mythical Show If we told you that a group of trolls would be strolling the streets during Canton’s First Friday events, you’d probably sit us down and ask us to please stop doing so much research on our beer section. But as much as we love our beer section, the trolls are true: The Troll Troupe, a group of auditioned local residents playing the parts of trolls, will be roaming local events as part of a campaign to raise awareness and support for research on Alzheimer’s and dementia. Sponsored by the Arts for Alzheimer’s organization, the Troll T...
Here’s a thing men do. When hard drinking with friends or brothers, one of them will invariably get the best idea he’s ever had. “We should buy our own bar!” The friend or brother will listen, give the idea its due consideration, weigh the pros and cons and then respond with, “Dude, we should totally buy our own bar.” They discuss names for a while, drink a few more, pass out, wake up the next morning and then go on with the business of their lives. That is the story of Danny and Donnie Boyer in all respects but one. Buying their own bar is exactly what they did. ...
The scene looks like something out of a low-budget time-travel movie: Armed with hammers and nails, a swarm of high-school students are laboring away at a huge pyramid, modeled after those in Egypt. Around them, attendees of Canton’s First Friday mill about, equal parts confused and intrigued. The students are using artifacts from the steel and rubber industries — a nice regional touch — to build the hieroglyphic forms that ornament the pyramid. That was on May 6. Now completed, the pyramid is sitting in the lot on the east side of Primo’s Restaurant at the corner of Fourth Street N...
Bologna is a lovely Italian city nestled in the Po Valley with beautiful fountains, red-tiled roofs, the oldest university in the world (1088), narrow streets, motorbikes — the whole European deal. In the book world, Bologna is home to the Bologna Book Fair, where Americans and Europeans make the deals for translating and publishing children’s books in those countries. It’s an important book fair because it crystallizes what books will be coming out in the young-adult book market in the next year. As it turns out, the authors, publishers and literary agents of two continents have all ...
European-inspired runway show in Akron There are three things every 20-something Akron girl has committed to memory: Thursday’s has the finest selection of hipster boys, Mr. Zub’s is always best at 3 a.m. and never walk past Zelio NOTO if you need that last paycheck. On June 18, the hard-to-resist NOTO threads will pull on our heartstrings (and our paychecks) at the store’s third annual summer fashion show. There are a few elements that set this year’s fashion show apart, however. The first? Unlike the past shows, held indoors at the High Street Gallery, the 2011 show will be held i...
“Portal 2” is the game of 2011 so far. Go play “Portal 2” as soon as possible. Oh. My editor just informed me that although the above review is completely true and sums the game up nicely, it is still about 600 words short. Please allow me to expand. “Portal” 2 is the follow-up to Valve Corporation's cult favorite (wait for it), “Portal.” It’s a first-person puzzle game where the main objective is to get from point A to point B. I suppose that can be said for 98 percent of all puzzle games, but what sets the “Portal” series apart is the Aperture Science Handhel...
Since 1989, Seattle’s influential recording artists Earth have been changing the way music fans expect a band from the “grunge” state to sound. This past February saw the release of their latest record, "Angels of Darkness, Demons Of Light 1." Buzzbin Magazine picked the brain of Earth founder/guitarist Dylan Carlson to get the real deal about the genre-splitting band. How did Earth first come to fruition? I had already been in two bands but was not happy with my playing so after taking some time off to woodshed, I moved back to Olympia and started a new band with Slim Moon and Gre...
The crack of a bat followed by the roar of the crowd; the scent of freshly mown grass mixed with the aroma of roasted peanuts. Spring is finally here, and with it comes the start of a new baseball season. The resumption of our national pastime is as perennial as the first green buds and shoots, yet this year some new offerings will be found at the local Akron Aeros game. From fireworks in the sky to fireworks on a plate, there’s a lot more than baseball going on at Canal Park Stadium. This year the Aeros have made some exciting additions to their lineup on the field — and off it as well...
Though he captured a few hearts with his band The District after two albums (along with endless nationwide tours), Ron Pope engineered a solo career after an extended hiatus of the band. Within a year, he gained a loyal following, made countless singles and received several offers from major record labels, eventually landing at Universal Republic. Now free from his contractual agreements, Pope steps out with “Whatever It Takes,” released last month courtesy of his own label, Hard Six Records. Tracks such as “If You Were A Stone” and “Our Song” seem primed for local Top 20 radio ...
In his native England, musician/comedian Neil Innes is a bit more of a household name, both as member of the 1960s Dadaist psychedelic musical combo The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and as star of multiple cult BBC TV shows, including “Rutland Weekend Television,” co-hosted with Eric Idle. But here in the States, Innes is probably best known for his contributions to various Monty Python-related projects, including “Spamalot” and the classic Beatles parody “The Rutles,” where Innes starred as Lennon opposite Idle’s McCartney. Innes has recently been on the concert circuit with his Bonzo...

Ever try to use canned food in place of your legos as a kid? Well, a handful of local artists, architects, contractors, companies and engineers have done just that to create work for CANstruction. Six teams are using 16,000 cans to create six unique designs including a VW bus, a ballpark mascot and a spiral. All cans will then be donated to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Build day occurred earlier this week at We Galley on 20 N. High Street in Akron. The Akron ArtWalk will take place this Saturday between 5-7pm and will make a stop at the location. The exhibit is free and open to the p...
Part guitar shop, part concert venue and wholly unique, Ohio Music Shop in downtown Kent is changing the way music stores do business. “It wasn’t our intention to have the most unique guitar store around,” said co-owner Jeff Fulkman. “It’s just what we’ve become.” Since opening a year ago, Ohio Music Shop has expanded from a small boutique to a 4,000-foot musician’s paradise featuring a concert stage, bar and huge array of vintage equipment, amplifiers, custom effects pedals and custom-made Woody James guitars. James, a co-owner, is no stranger to the music business. Hi...
Pittsburgh’s alternative world rock band Rusted Root’s new album Stereo Rodeo brings back the feel-good relaxed vibe that made them a hit in the 90s. If anyone’s looking for a nostalgia trip then look no further than Stereo Rodeo. It has the exotic jam sound they’ve become known for. The combination of an acoustic guitar intertwined with an electric guitar and a smooth wailing saxophone, a massive wall of bongos, drums and tambourines that keep a constant upbeat tempo throughout their songs and the background singers who add in subtle echoes and hold notes to give the lead singer...

To further add to the pop sport sensation known as modern flat-track roller derby, we are pleased to be offering this sport for junior skaters ranging from 7-17 years of age! The dedication, hard work and passion of the adult leagues have helped pave the way for this growth that has now spread to the youth, and we've embraced every opportunity since our inception in December of 2009! Now celebrating our second year as Ohio’s premier junior roller derby organization, the Cleveland Firestarters invite you to help fuel the fire, by supporting this great organization. We've been very bus...
Ever been out with someone who texts the entire time you’re talking to them? They’re not paying attention, that little jingle goes off constantly, you get to hear, “One sec, what was that?” about 12 times. I recently had a guy in the shop asking if I had a certain book. He would read the title, and I would look up the publisher and tell him how much and how fast I could get it. While I did that, he was looking it up on Amazon to calculate if it was cheaper or faster with their shipping. Like nine books. I asked him why he even came in to a store, as he was obviously more comfortab...
More than 200 people attended the opening of local art student Tommy Horning, Jr.’s first solo show on April 15. The exhibition is now on display at Studio 2091 in Cuyahoga Falls, curated by owner Amy Mothersbaugh Roos. In line with other unconventional shows at Studio 2091, Horning’s six sculptures are arranged in an imaginative setup. Several pieces are suspended from the ceiling; cotton clouds give the space a dream-like feeling. Painted on the walls are replicas of Horning’s original sketches and notes, narrating the creative process behind the pieces on display. Horning, an un...
Filters, folders, firewalls and freeware — it’s amazing how many lines of defense those male-enhancement ads and virus-infected links can barrel their way through to your inbox. If you’re sick of spam, here’s a fun way to play with it before hitting Delete: Go to SpamRecycling.com. This German site allows you to send your junk (or any, really) emails to spam@spamrecycling.com, and then uses the text to create a piece of art, with a whirling vortex of words that eventually transforms into a cosmic-looking design. Use the controls to change the color or shape of the form, then download t...
