It is difficult to describe Shit-Box Jimmy without arriving at “Just go see them play live.” The Cleveland three-piece has built steam in recent months, largely due to their efforts to play out and expose themselves — er, their music — to new people. This is a band that does not blend into the rest of the evening’s bill; the spastic, kinetic energy that they create is impossible to overlook. Front man Joey Nix loses control when he plays. It’s as if the songs combust and fight their way out of him — he howls with just a hint of twang — and this unrestrained delivery commands...

Powder Hounds is two-pieced band formed in 2011 by Kent musicians Ryan Molnar and Andrew Bittaker. The band’s name stems from its members’ pseudonyms: Ronnie “Rails” Hounds and Andy Powder, who together make a wave of power, raw energy and innovation. Molnar, a.k.a. Ronnie Hounds, is in charge of the drums, noise and rhythmic summoning. Bittaker, or Andy Powder, sings, plays guitar and takes care of the feedback and fuzz. “Ryan and I have been playing in bands together since high school,” Bittaker said, “but never in this arrangement.” The singer studied classical g...

If you live in northeast Ohio and haven’t heard of Stone Slinger, you must have been hiding in a cave for ten years — the Canton natives have played nearly every bar in the area. If that’s the case, come out of that hole and allow us to catch you up to speed. Stone Slinger consists of Todd “Wolf” Williams on vocals, Andy “Riffman” Masalko and Mike “Stone” Fisher on guitar, Neal “Beard” Franklin on bass and Kevan “Mountain” Phares rounding out the band on drums. Buzzbin caught up with the band over enough cheap beers and cigarettes to feed a village in Africa. Afte...

On August 6, the Auricle is hosting a benefit for Brian Hudson. Hudson was involved in a car accident in June, and he suffered injuries including a severed spine and a broken back. The 27 year old was in the intensive care unit for three weeks before he was able to eat and breathe on his own. He will never walk again, but the money that is made from this show will help with recovery down the road. Mr. Gnome is headlining the benefit along with minimalist folk rocker Jaybird Goody and folkies duo Zen and Jane. The benefit is being put together by friends and family of Hudson. Mr. Gnome s...

When he was 3 years old, he was playing drums and drawing like crazy. When he was 14, he picked up the bass. He has toured all over the U.S. and beyond. Both his day job and night gigs form a life in which he is always doing something he loves, creating. He is Gerard Dominick. Dominick currently plays bass in The Juke Hounds, a rocky blues band based in Akron. They had planned on playing at the Kent Blues Fest until they ran into some scheduling problems. After winning the Northeast Ohio Road to Memphis Competition, The Juke Hounds competed in the International Blues Competition in Memphis....

Michael Dean Damron is the real deal. He has been playing music most of his life and you can tell by the raw throated raspiness of his voice that he has spent his share of time in smokey bars screaming his soul out. His new album, "Plea From A Ghost" is available now from Denver based label Suburban Home Records and we highly recommend it! It's jam-packed with some of the finest heartfelt outlaw country songs you could ever hope to hear. Currently on  a national tour that is bringing him through Ohio, Buzzbin caught up with Mike D to talk about his new album and his gigs in Canton on March 25...

We called up Tim Carbone of the New Jersey-based jam/folk/bluegrass band Railroad Earth before their upcoming show at The Kent Stage. Tim is one of the band’s founding members and their resident violinist; he chatted with us about his early start in music, the band’s roots and how Railroad Earth got its Jack Kerouac-inspired name. Buzzbin: What initiated your love for music? Tim Carbone: I was lucky because my parents were music lovers. My mom was a trombone player back in the late ‘30s and ‘40s. My dad was a dance instructor at the Brooklyn in New York City and that’s how they...
