Pop-punk is increasingly seen as a formulaic copy of Green Day and Blink 182 covers with rearranged lyrics, but City Lights sets out to prove that wrong with a tightly produced mix that covers all the bases – from the upbeat “Where You Been” to the nostalgic “Please Let Me Know.” The one gripe I have with the album is probably more a sign of my age than a legitimate gripe. The album as a whole feels a little forced and confused, as if they covered all of their bases systematically rather than organically. “Please Let Me Know” gives off the feeling of nostalgia, of time spent a...

Nov. 1 Cleveland, OH, House of Blues Cleveland In anticipation of the October 4th release of their new album, Radiosurgery, beloved pop punkers New Found Glory are unleashing a new video for the record’s title track. The video clip for “Radiosurgery” is a hilarious, high-energy homage to the classic Ramones’ video for “I Wanna Be Sedated.” The video features New Found Glory performing their song in an unremarkable hallway as an increasingly Felliniesque parade of riff raff, including celebrities, politicians and strippers, commit acts of joyful debauchery around the seemingly ...

Tonight, a full lineup hits the stage at Barley's Pub. Ranging from growling hardcore to happy hip-hop, there's a little something for everyone represented. Local nerdcore hip-hop duo, 2D6, will open a set full of rock and hardcore which seems odd until you realize 2D6 is playing everywhere lately. Maybe they're shooting for the "hardest working band in nerdcore" moniker. They're certainly energetic enough to get the crowd going, regardless. Pop-punk trio The Royal Remedy will keep the atmosphere charged, as will the acoustic rock strummings of Candlelight Armada. Headliners We Shall Prevail...

What do you get when you mix five guys and women’s footwear? Indie rock, apparently. Stiletto is a five-piece band out of the Akron area and members Chad Tisch, Mike DeCarlo, Ryan Chiera, Kyle Shave and Allen Cooper Gilleland have been playing together for six years. “I’ve been with Ryan ever since I learned how to play, so I’ve been with him for about 10 years,” DeCarlo said. “We sort of just met everyone through the local music scene when we were in high school. I think it’s been about six years with these five people.” None of the guys in the group had been playing ...

Johnie 3 Sex Bomb Johnie 3 has always affixed with the Ramones label, when really that has never been the case. The band has always had a Chixdiggit swagger to it, and while a lot of the band’s material is certainly pop-punk, “Sex Bomb” sees the group going harder and faster than ever before. The title track is the best song the band has ever done. The hook is fantastic, the guitars and drums slam - it’s straight punk ‘n’ roll. They chop up hardcore punk efforts like “BMF” and “Movin Up” with their staple Chixdiggit//Screeching Weasel sound in “Little Heartbreaker” an...

The Atom Age Kill Surf City When Rocket From the Crypt called it a day, well, it sucked pretty hardcore. There wasn’t a band quite like RFTC (immortalized in the Danko Jones song “RIP RFTC”) and arguably there wasn’t a better live band to come from the mid-90s rock boom. There was the whole fast California feel, the scorching leads, the pounding rhythm section, the horns that were insanely rock ‘n’ roll (not ska!) and the pompousness of a band that new they were the best game in town whether the crowd knew it or not. The Atom Age worship RFTC. Some tracks on “Kill Surf City” at...

The Spitwads are from Akron's deepest darkest punk rock bowels. They play songs about porn stars and masturbation, wear stinky leather jackets, converse shoes and consume enough cheap beer to put down a large horse. They will be in full-on pop-punk debauchery mode at Ronali's The Rock in Massillon on Friday March 4th. You may need to wear a raincoat. The Said So, The Dead Records (from Ft Wayne IN) and The Most Beautiful Losers will also be there swilling beer and delivering fine rock treats for you kiddies....

Job for a Cowboy Tues. 12/14 @ Peabody’s, Cleveland For a while, all anyone would say about this band was how young they all were.  All that has changed, and their rise to the top has been fast.  They’ve created a blend of musicianship and cutting-edge songcraft to treat you to some modern extreme in intense music.  The southern Ohio band Skeletonwitch will offer an extreme open. The Queers / Kepi Ghoulie Tues. 12/14 @ Grog Shop, Cleveland It took The Queers 11 years of the grind to achieve some sort of notoriety.  Which is a crime, as their catchy pop-punk show is a wick...

Gleasons Drift is a band all about keeping the spirit of rock’n’roll alive, which is done artfully on the new album Blythe Township Mellencamp.  It’s rock/americana with hints of country; a convergence of light-hearted barroom music with a strong focus on harmony and catchy hooks. Their clever lyrics are strung together over eleven diverse tracks, bouncing between southern blues, pop, punk and garage rock, bringing a new flavor into each song. They get honkey-tonk on “Crowes” before displaying their Meat Puppets influence with a sped-up tempo on “It Ain’t Easy Being Me....

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are known for blending country, blues, pop, punk and doo-wop into an Americana stew.  On their new release, Mojo, they go back to their Gulf Coast roots and emerge with an album drenched in blues as black as the BP oil goo!  No more are the pop melodies of the past; Tom Petty’s nasal voice is still a familiar comfort but here the blues reigns king with lead guitarist Mike Campbell selling his soul at the crossroads.  His guitar is like another voice, unleashed, with nods to the great guitar gods of the past. Like other great blues bands, the Heartbre...

By Julia Kazar Pop-punk phenoms Just Surrender are preparing to release their third full length album, Phoenix on June 22nd. The album will include two songs that were originally released on an earlier EP called “Crazy” and “Stronger Now,” as well as ten brand new songs. The latest album sounds much like the bands earlier music, with everything from screaming vocals to acoustic melodies and everything in between on it. By far the standout track on Phoenix is “Carried Away.” The song opens with some of the best acoustic guitar playing on the album, and it only continues ...

By Sarah Foor Ric Nimrod and his bandmates have always had a knack for naming their bands. It takes forever to find that name that just clicks but, oh, when it does a few words tell you exactly what you’re about to hear.  The Giggitys, ¾ of the legendary Northeast Ohio band The Nimrods plus a FNG, think that both of their names say that you’re about hear “Pop, punk, power and fun.” Ric Nimrod muses, “I’m not sure that a lot has changed between The Nimrods and The Giggitys. But I would say we’ve gotten better.”  The Giggitys feature orginal Nimrods Ric and Dan Halen...

Beard of Stars Records Stoner Rock Get ready to take a ride through a wavy dark pipe that is 500 feet in length. Imagine while in there you see Ray Manzerik, swirling images, flashing light and the prince of darkness himself. Now you have the mind mesh of “Turn Me on Baby” and “Marshmallow,” the opening tracks of this Detroit-based album. The groove put out by “Marshmallow” might be one of the best out there in rock ‘n’ roll. With a combo of Bowie, The Doors and Black Sabbath, it’s no wonder they call their sound “drug rock.” Think you can’t mix that with surf-pop p...
