Written off in the states by many as an AC/DC clone in the early 80s, Scandinavia (there is DEFINITELY something in the water there) and Krokus strike again with “Hoodoo.” Yeah, a lot of it does sound like AC/DC. Well, okay, basically all of it. All original members are back and it shows. As the title suggests, there’s a hit of southern rock flavor to this. The true crime is a song like “Hoodoo Woman” is a thousand times better than anything the ridiculous reincarnation of Lynyrd Skynard has ever done, and Krokus is from Scandinavia and named after a flower! They cover “Born to Be ...
Danko Jones B-Sides Danko Jones has carved out a sound and image quite unique in his 15 years in the biz. He’s streamlined it, in essence, to the point that he’s pretty instantly recognizable with the strum of a few chords, or in most cases, an opening line to one of his countless relationship sermons. But “B-Sides” shows just how he got there. Sure, of the 27 (!) tracks in all here, about half of them could comprise another unmistakable Danko record. One could even could argue that the best cuts of “B-Sides” would be his strongest record to date. But aside from the unmistakable ...
The Matrimonials self-titled album opens with grandeur with a track called “Bobby 17 | 3.141593.” Why pi is relevant, I don’t know, but someone (who I can only assume is Bobby) shouts out a two-minute pseudo-sermon about three wise men. Lord knows what he’s talking about, but it certainly gets you pumped up for the next 18 tracks. The band’s music sounds like a cross between new and old punk. On songs like “In Cleveland” and “Bigboiz” they sound like the take influence from Sex Pistols and The Ramones. There’s a The Offspring and 311 feel on songs like “Suspiria....
CJ Ramone is best known as the bass player for The Ramones after Dee Dee left the band. Now he's out on his own and he's still playing that rock 'n' rolly punk that the Ramones popularized, though it does get a little bit heavier at moments. 8/7 Peabody's • Cleveland ...
Pulling up to the house in Jackson where The Big Sweet is holding their weekly practice, we can hear echoes of rim shots and bass from the driveway. “I told them to turn it down,” apologized Nick Regas, the father of lead singer and guitarist Sam, who met us at the door. “I don’t think they did.” And frankly, they won’t: The Big Sweet’s star is still rising, and there’s no telling how high the parabola will go. The four-piece indie-pop group is intimately familiar with the Northeast Ohio venue circuit, having played at Musica, House of Blues and the Tangier. They’re sta...
To commemorate The Ramones Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Grammy Awards, three acclaimed Cleveland establishment's have join forces to celebrate the occasion. On Saturday, February 19th, Happy Dog (in the Gordon Square district of Cleveland) will kick things off with Ramonesmania, the first of what organizer Jim Lanza hopes to be an annual evening of Ramones tribute performances. The line up includes The Pinheads (featuring CJ Gunn, who played with Markey Ramone), The Giggitys, Missle Toe and Violent Suburban Marriage. A $5 dollar cover will be charged at the doors as things get und...
What a simple joy bowling can be. Whether it’s an afternoon trip to the lanes with the family or a night out with friends, bowling is always a welcome cure for breaking up winter monotony. Plus, it’s an activity that one doesn’t have to be very good at to enjoy. So when Akron’s The Oxnards invited me to roll a few frames at Stonehedge, I was more than happy to oblige. Their brand of manic “Talking Heads meets The Ramones” (as vocalist and guitarist Wes Cowie puts it) rock has already gained the band some loyal followers in the Akron area, helping to pack the house at recent Anna...
Dan Miraldi, the NE Ohio-based musician whose candy-sweet pop songs are underpinned with decades of American rock history, recently released Tease, a new three-song solo EP. Miraldi, who also plays keyboard with the Washington, DC-area band The Silver Liners, produced Tease with Kyle Downes. Jay Nemeyer provided some guitar, bass and drums. It’s easy to think of Tease as a kind of appetizer for Miraldi’s future releases: The three songs- “Lucinda”, “The Holy Roller Stone Revival” and the title track- demonstrate a broad range of musical talents and lyrical subjects, an...
Dan Miraldi Thirsty It’s hard for any contemporary band to operate outside the influence of the Sixties, one of the most musically revolutionary periods of the century—and Dan Miraldi, a Northeast Ohio native who recently released Thirsty, his debut album, is no exception. The influence isn’t just unmistakable in the songs themselves, from the folksy Beatles-esque sound of “More Than Yesterday” to the Elvis-style rockabilly of “More and More”: the idealism of the decade also styles the way Miraldi positions himself as a singer and, ultimately, how his music affects those ...
They describe themselves as “your favorite band’s favorite band”. Their music is like boiling water thrown on the back of God while he’s attempting to climax. Claiming influences from Motorhead to the MC5, White Rhino is tearing down the Beachland Ballroom on May 26th with Cleveland axe hounds All Dinosaurs and certifiable madmen Spacer Ace. Hailing from Austin, Texas, power trio White Rhino is on tour to promote their new album “Heroin Thunder”. Buzzbin got a peek at this album and it’s viciously awesome. Through their savage riffs and hot lick-oriented hooks, these ...
