BY BRITTANY NADER Known by some as the drummer of the promising Canton-based band Husbands & Wives, and by most others as the mysterious Hurdy Gurdy Man, Brian McCoy enters Napoli's Italian Eatery sans instrument and settles in to enjoy a pepperoni, sausage and green pepper pie. It's rare in America to see anyone playing the weird and wonderful hurdy gurdy, especially someone is in his early 20s. Here, McCoy is just another post-collegiate dude escaping the rain to enjoy some quality Italian eats. On stage, he is a wizard with that bizarrely cool instrument, and through bites of pizza an...

The Woosley Band is a lot twangier and rootsier than Guided By Voices ever were, but that’s the most frequent comparison. Frontman Sean Woosley’s voice sounds more like a southern version of Peter Gabriel than Robert Pollard, but the catchy, twangy tunes he pens are a joy to the ears. Veterans of the Columbus rock scene, Woosley Band have been popping up in performances in Northeast Ohio recently and hopefully that will continue. Live, they dish out gloriously sloppy Pavement-style alternative country-rock that’s deeply infectious to listen to. Keep your eyes peeled for more local shows ...

We caught up with Dalin Jones, bassist and vocalist of Son Of Neckbeard, Canton, Ohio's own horror rock band. Here's our 10 questions for Son of Neckbeard: Who the hell is Neckbeard? Neckbeard is the being. He is the alpha and omega. He is the creator. He's so much bigger than anyone could ever be. We always pictured him as some type of Viking god, but it takes so many parts to be a god. So we're the Son of Neckbeard. Tell me about what inspires your sound? There's just a really broad spectrum. We're fans of everything from Sleep, FuManchu and all the way back to bands like The Doobie...

Mr. 101 is a hip-hop fusion outfit out of Canton. Normally, appending the word fusion to the end of anything is a red flag for me - jazz fusion is usually bad jazz, Japanese-Mexican fusion is a dinner engagement I'm waiting to miss and hip-hop/rock fusion usually ends up being a rock band with a vocalist finally ready to admit they can't sing. Not everything ends up embodying the stereotype, however, and "Brain the Cerebral Balance" is much more the exception than the rule. From the drum crash that introduces the first track, "Introducing 101," to the subdued rock guitar that closes the set...

November 5 - Youngstown - Cedar's Lounge On November 5, pop-rockers Dolson will be sliding through Cedar's Lounge with After Z, calleBand and Woodson. Tickets are just a five dollar bill. As a teenager, singer/songwriter Andy Dolson was breaking the strings on his family’s Wurlitzer spinet piano writing pop songs reminiscent of a modern Jackson Brown. These songs ended up landing the young musician some pretty high profile solo gigs and some local radio-play. The culmination of the latter, along with a growing fan base attracted the attention of some of Northeast Ohio’s most respected mu...

Foo Fighters play the Quicken Loans Arena on 9/20. There are hundreds of jokes about drummers being the least sexy member of a band. This is probably because they sit at the back of the stage, hidden behind a drum set nearly as large as them and hit things. The drummer may be the timepiece of the band, but they don’t have the face time that the other members do, so they are usually lost in the commotion. When Dave Grohl started Foo Fighters in 1994, it was thought of as a joke. How could a drummer start his own rock band, especially when he was the only official member? When he walked...

Initially formed by guitarist Jeremey Poparad as a way to jam out with a handful of friends who were moving out of state, Axon-Neuron became something else entirely. Within a matter of a few months, the band banged out a full-length and even booked a few gigs in the Akron area. The result was Bring Songs, the band’s first full-length album in which they recorded in May of this year. The members of Axon-Neuron call themselves a rock band with jazz and classical influences but this writer sees things a tad bit differently. At first listen, the jazz and classical inspirations stick out like ...

Danko Jones Below the Belt Some bands get lucky. Danko Jones works for it, and he’s still not chillin’ at a pad in the Hollywood Hills. More like modesty in Toronto. On his sixth full-length release “Below the Belt,” Danko’s busting his ass arguably more than ever. Seriously. He’s got Elijah Wood, Selma Blair and Lemmy in the video for the album’s first single “Full of Regret,” which may be the first truly successful attempt at bridging the gap between underground rock and mainstream radio. Unfortunately, I’m one of about 10 people in the world who gets that, and judging ...

Lacerda is a rock band out of Canada that made their way to the States to share their album Epic Pop with the Warped Tour audience. These guys, although not full time rockers yet, certainly deserve the title and it was great to get the chance to talk to the founder, Milenko. Nicole: What is one thing you absolutely have to have on tour? Milenko: One thing you have to have on tour is baby wipes. Because we all get very very stinky dirty. Nicole: That is one that comes up a lot. That and like baby powder. Stay clean and dry. Milenko: Water too, absolute must. Nicole: If you we...

Over the last 20 years, Clutch has bred a cult following most artists would give their left arm for. Alternatively described as a punk band, a jam band, a stoner rock band and a metal band, their discography proves that they are all that and more. Clutch is made up of Neil Fallon (vocals, guitar), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass) and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). Though they have nine studio albums and a selection of live albums, EPs and B-side compilations, they maintain their fan loyalty through a steady touring schedule with a variety of accompanying acts. The band has its roots in Ma...

This rock band has performed with the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and its cover of “Girl You’ll Be a Woman Soon” appeared in the Tarantino cult classic “Pulp Fiction.” It’s been 16 years since Urge Overkill’s last album, and now they’re releasing a new one and touring again. If this isn’t historic, I don’t know what is. ...
