November 19 - Canton - The Auricle Woods is a Knoxville singer/songwriter who spends most of his time on the road. “A lot of my songs are very much based in classic country music, while others are grounded in straightforward, greasy rock n' roll, “ Woods said. In April, Woods released “The Matt Woods Manifesto” and spent the summer touring the country and writing new material. Unfortunately, he missed his gig at Buzzbin's Brewed Roots Festival after brutally breaking his finger (see his facebook page for the video). This show marks Woods' first show back in Canton since the injury. Hi...

This Akron band of rock ‘n’ roll street punks delivers the finest anthemic singa-longs you could ever hope to hear. First Offense’s Rust Belt songs make you just want to dance and sing and scream your heart out. They’ve been at it long enough to have developed a rabid fan base that drinks heartily and gets as rowdy as the band does. The floor at Annabell’s is always a frothing sea of spilled beer and sweat when these guys hit their first chord. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see them live then please do yourself a favor and make it happen. They’re the real deal, and have a...

Anyone who knows anything about Lemmy Kilmister knows his love for roots rock. So it's not surprising to see him team up with Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats) and rockabilly guitar legend Danny B. Harvey for a collection of rock standards and a pair of originals for HeadCat's "Walk the Walk ... Talk the Talk." "American Beat" is the clear-cut single here, unabashed 12-bar blues style rock 'n' roll with a declaration to dance. What are you gonna do? Not dance? Not an option here. The group does foot-stomping renditions of "Let it Rock" (Chuck Berry), "Something Else" (Eddie Cochran) and "Crossroad...

Initially formed by guitarist Jeremey Poparad as a way to jam out with a handful of friends who were moving out of state, Axon-Neuron became something else entirely. Within a matter of a few months, the band banged out a full-length and even booked a few gigs in the Akron area. The result was Bring Songs, the band’s first full-length album in which they recorded in May of this year. The members of Axon-Neuron call themselves a rock band with jazz and classical influences but this writer sees things a tad bit differently. At first listen, the jazz and classical inspirations stick out like ...

Still Drinkin’, Still Rockin’ The Unband comes to film Ed. note: This article originally appeared in the first incarnation of Youngstown Pulse sometime between 2003-05. B.J. LISKO Youngstown Pulse Magazine Editor God damnit. I didn’t want to drink tonight. But of course, a night I designate as “recovery,” in a very loose sense, there in the rusty tin box at the end of the driveway is the documentary of The Unband, “We Like To Drink, We Like to Play Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Fuckin’ assholes. Two viewings of this, 12 beers later, and here I am at the computer. I’ve been call...

Everyone’s got a filter. No one says what they truly think. It’s all pleasantries and hand shakes. Beau Basement wants none of that. What he does want is a little danger in rock ‘n’ roll. Ed. note: This article originally appeared in the Summer 2010 Youngstown Pulse. By B.J. LISKO Youngstown Pulse Magazine Editor My fondest story of Beau Basement, the acoustic G.G Allin/Darby Crash/punk rock Dylan, as well as First in Space drummer and most recently new drummer for Turbo Lovers, happened a few years back at The Draught House. Myself, Stiv Reynolds of The Hollywood Blondes and Bea...

Danko Jones B-Sides Danko Jones has carved out a sound and image quite unique in his 15 years in the biz. He’s streamlined it, in essence, to the point that he’s pretty instantly recognizable with the strum of a few chords, or in most cases, an opening line to one of his countless relationship sermons. But “B-Sides” shows just how he got there. Sure, of the 27 (!) tracks in all here, about half of them could comprise another unmistakable Danko record. One could even could argue that the best cuts of “B-Sides” would be his strongest record to date. But aside from the unmistakable ...

Dizzy Whore Desperate Side of Rock 'n' Roll Dizzy Whore could probably give two shits about this review. Any original band in 2009 adopting the image and style of almost everything Sunset Strip is in it for themselves and for the sheer passion of rock ‘n’ roll. At their best they sound like a glammed-up Alice Cooper. At their worst, they sound like a more modern version of L.A. Guns or Cinderella. Take that however you want to take it, this reviewer thinks it’s exactly what they’re going for. And with a few rare exceptions, on “Desperate Side of Rock ‘n’ Roll” they pull it of...

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll: No matter how much of a cliché this has become, that legendary trifecta remains the motto the Dwarves first embraced 25 years ago when the band was created — though they don’t acknowledge it directly, preferring to take the “show, don’t tell” approach. “We did Pittsburgh last night, very energetic crowd,” said Dwarves lead singer Blag Dahlia, when I asked how the current tour was going. “Had some sexual intercourse.” “It’s way easier for me to get laid now, I’ve become so much more legendary,” he joked. (At least, I think he wa...

If one repeat listen of "School's Out" and fond memories of "Wayne's World" can't convince you of this one, then there's no hope. Still one of the most beloved heavy-metal artists out there, Cooper's headed to our very own Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame when he's inducted this year. So Rock 'n' Roll has had this reputation of being a bit "not as awesome" as it once was. You know, not enough gutiar solos, subpar lyrics and singing. But Blackout Superstar has been a beacon of bright rocking-ness. Now they're releasing a CD and you'd be stupid to miss out on the real Rock 'n' Roll. 8/20 Rocbar • Cleveland ...

Though often connected with garage rock, U.K. band Holly Golightly is more a mixture of pre-rock electric country blues, folk and less frantic rock ‘n’ roll. It brings to mind a bourbon-soaked honky-tonk bar, cracked hearts and foot-stomping good times. MORE INFO HERE...
