While being no more than three years on the scene, Akron's Shivering Timbers has bloomed rapidly into one of the most touted bands from the Northeast Ohio region. Composed of husband-and-wife duo Jayson and Sarah Benn, the group's sound comprises folk-tinged indie rock that blends enough styles to make it nearly uncategorizable. The band's strength is in its ability to shift dynamically from sing-songy nursery rhymes to noisy jams that bring to mind the more cohesive compositions of Cap 'n Jazz. In between, the group dabbles between gospel, punk and blues. The band's records are truly a tes...

By Rory Axelrod Akron's Shivering Timbers second effort is a sprawling work that comprises as many genres as it does moods. And that is the strength of this record: its ability to wash the listener over in waves of nostalgia, and wonder, with a sense of introspective inquiry that could make one wistful or regretful, depending on their disposition. Ask an Akronite where the hippest neighborhood in town is, and they’ll undoubtedly point you in the direction of Highland Square. The eclectic, progressive area is home to dozens of superb, longstanding local businesses, historic buildings and many creative minds. (Earlier this summer, it was announced that the stylish Montrose organic grocery store Mustard Seed Market would be opening their third location here.) On September 3, this year’s installment of the annual arts festival Art in the Square will make one of Akron’s coolest communities exponentially cooler by adding vendors, foo...

Begun in 2008, Record Store Day was intended as an international jollification of the wondrous world of music — and since then, it’s become more raucous and widespread than ever before. Each April 16, the day marks sales, events, concerts and more for the hundreds of indie music-store owners across the globe. In Akron, nestled in the flourishing Highland Square, Square Records carries an array of vinyl and compact discs. Owner David Ignizio welcomes Record Store Day with open arms — and crossed fingers. “It's a tremendous help to all the independent stores, but it can also be inc...

I have wronged Akron’s Shivering Timbers. On two separate, sigh-laden nights I watched them perform. Earlier this year I stumbled into Annabell’s after consuming what felt like half of the Matinee’s supply of Two-Hearted because Unnamed Girl A had said “blah, blah, blah…go away” a few hours earlier.  Shivering Timbers played upstairs… I remembered that much. But I couldn’t for the life of me remember what they sounded like (or walking to my friend’s house and passing out on his couch, for that matter). So, this past summer, I made it my goal to catch them at th...

It's a night of smooth, sultry music and pretty female vocalists at Annabell's on Thursday. In a basement normally filled to the brim with metalheads, one group and two solo artists keep it mellow for the small but receptive crowd. First up, Shivering Timbers deliver nursery-rhyme songs to the beat of a drum, electric guitar, stand-up bass and banjo. It all started for them when husband and wife combo Sarah and Jayson Benn had a baby. "We were always sitting around playing nursery rhymes for her," Sarah said. That turned around when they played a few of their songs for Sarah's long-time ...

Rachel Roberts, the lovable indie-folk Akron native, will play at Annabell's Thursday, July 1st, along with Plug-In Reindeer and Shivering Timbers. Roberts, known for her mellow music and lulling voice, keeps it simple with an acoustic guitar and solid songwriting. Her influences range from classical to classic rock, and has performed with many of the big-name acts from the area such as Chrissie Hynde, DEVO and The Black Keys. She's working on finishing her second album "Lighting Loves the Kite," as well as an album with her band, Rachel's Secret Stache. Her voice is clear and mesmerizi...
