BY STEVE HALLO Here's the thing about the Canton rockers inSuper Predator: For the most part, they actually are super predators. This became abundantly clear about a half hour into our conversation as guitar player Eric Blankenhorn and drummer Dan Meinhart laid out their zombie contingency plans. The moniker also suits the band's sound — a creeping, prowling sludgy rock, that veers off into metal and blues regions, throwing the listener off the fact that they are being stalked until Super Predator pounces into full-force crushing sonic territory. Equal parts Fu Manchu, Sonic Youth and ston...
I have made it my personal goal to catch this Akron band live. And if their live show is even half as cool as the songs I’ve been listening to online, then I’m in for a treat. They’re kind of mysterious in a way, with weird but cool song titles like “Rocktopus,” “Bullet Proof Tiger” and “Ultimate Warrior,” and musically they remind me of The Melvins, Sleep, Sonic Youth and old Kiss (before they completely sold their souls). Great stoner rawk music with a strange twist of noise, tempo changes and humor that I can’t wait to see live. I recommend you do the same....
Orlando is home to some very talented dudes, but singer/guitar player Bob Hershberger and drummer Waylon Thornton are a sonic force to be reckoned with. I saw them almost tear a stage to pieces and shake a room of soulless hipsters to their very core. Sounding like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth meets My Bloody Valentine on a coke binge, it’s hard to believe that such a powerful, and at times melodic, noise comes from only two people. I know what you’re thinking — The Black Keys — and you’re wrong. Bob On Blonde is regularly delivering earthquakes off the Richter scale charts in Florid...
Brooklyn prog-punk rockers Pterodactyl have origins in an off-campus house at Oberlin College with a big, smelly basement crusted in mildew. At first listen it might be hard to believe something so melodic could foster under such circumstances, but on the band’s latest effort, “Spills Out,” it’s exactly on point. The group evolved as a house party band hosting numerous touring acts where they got a feel for what was going on in other parts of the country. “It was awesome,” guitarist/vocalist Joe Kremer said. “Matt Marlin (drummer/vocalist) and I lived in this big house. We bou...
Sonic Youth would not exist without its core – Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. While others members have come and gone over the last 30 years of the band's existence, the husband and wife duo has always been the key to holding Sonic Youth together. Now word has come through that Moore and Gordon have called its splitsville, which in effect has placed the legendary indie rockers in limbo. Gordon and Moore announced in a statement that they are separating after 27 years of marriage but will continued with a planned Sonic Youth South American tour in November. The press release goes on to stat...
First R.E.M. officially calls it quits, and now the heart of Sonic Youth splits in two. Have the alternative (or indie, or however we describe them now) rock gods forsaken us!? Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon have been married for 27 years. Sonic Youth has been together for 30. Now, in an official press release, the two have decided to end their marriage and the fate of one independent rock's most iconic bands is yet to be decided. Their rep from Matador Records followed up the press release with this statement: "Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they h...
New Madrid is a town in Missouri, and it’s also the name of one of the most active fault lines in the world — one that shifts every 200 years or so. Last time it shifted, it made the Mississippi River run backwards. Oh, and that was in 1812. New Madrid is also the name of one of the noisiest, most poetic, most gloriously dangerous rock outfits in Tennessee. Started by Missouri boyhood friends Andrew Dietz (vocals and guitar) and Shea Langer (bass) and later adding Blake Loftis on drums, this band is as reckless as they are rocking. On any given night they might be so drunk they can bare...
The Matrimonials Rage into Canton June 22 “Usually our songs are about drinking, having a good time, prostitutes, our current celebrity obsession and occasionally Matt decides he has feelings and writes something gay.” I first met The Matrimonials when my band was finishing up a particularly brutal 30-day tour. We pulled into Baltimore on day 28, completely beat and in dire need of a night off from partying. We didn’t get it. Not even slightly. From the first chords of a glorious 45-minute set we connected with these drunken clowns like long-lost brothers. Since then, we regu...
Pulling up to the house in Jackson where The Big Sweet is holding their weekly practice, we can hear echoes of rim shots and bass from the driveway. “I told them to turn it down,” apologized Nick Regas, the father of lead singer and guitarist Sam, who met us at the door. “I don’t think they did.” And frankly, they won’t: The Big Sweet’s star is still rising, and there’s no telling how high the parabola will go. The four-piece indie-pop group is intimately familiar with the Northeast Ohio venue circuit, having played at Musica, House of Blues and the Tangier. They’re sta...
Kent-based band Araby consists of singer-guitarist Bailey Hugh Webster, drummer Zach Loudin and bassist Charlie Loudin. Before Araby, Webster and Zach previously played together as early teenagers, primarily working on two-piece music.“We played a lot of The White Stripes and The Black Keys just for fun,” Webster said. “We were in a two-piece band, so we wanted to play two-piece stuff.”The musicians also played with Charlie’s earlier band, Elephant Bitch, which they described as experimental-noise. In summer 2010, Webster, a German major who graduated in December 2010, and Zach, a jun...
Esben and the Witch Although just a few years old, this English band has put a lot of miles on the old tour bus. They were signed last year by Matador Records and joined the ranks with heavy weights like Sonic Youth, Interpol and Belle & Sebastian. Impressive. Their sound is experimental and gothic. Intrigued? ...
BY | D.BEALL She's in her car in Georgia, driving around and smoking something fabulous. Her voice is laidback, a stark contrast to the nails on your chest screeching she’s been known to do. Buzzbin is talking to Julia Kugel, lead singer and guitarist for The Coathangers, a post-punk psycho-pop group of fine-ass young ladies who have been garnering a bit of buzz lately. Their second album, Scramble, came out last year, and it’s a record that stands out- originality, attitude and a whole lot of barking and hollering is the name of the game here. Songs like “Gettin’ Mad...
A rolling Pixie gathers no dust seems to be the way Kim Deal is looking at life as an alt rocker in the midst of the 21st century. Fresh off the European tour with the Pixies, the veteran bass player is working on new demos for her longtime side project The Breeders for a potential upcoming album which would be the band’s fifth and ninth overall release. As it was in the beginning, Deal uses her band as a creative outlet which affords her more artistic freedom than that was gained with the aforementioned Pixies. Playing in the shadow of Pixie frontman Black Francis, Deal is able to...
