One of the easiest ways to mark Northeast Ohio’s changing seasons is by observing where the staff of Buzzbin can be found drinking itself into oblivion. The trees are budding, the air is tinged with the smell of fresh-cut grass, and our editors and contributors are dragging themselves from the rocks they’ve been living under to spend the next five months finding reasons to drink outdoors. Here are some of Buzzbin’s favorite patio bars for doing just that. – Seth Borgan Mike Nasvadi — Editor-in-Chief I’ll tell you why I like the patio at the Erie Street Pub in Massillon the best...
Every U.S. region carries an image, good or bad, among the rest of the country, believes Robb Hankins, president and CEO of the Stark County nonprofit ArtsinStark. Whether fair or not, Northeast Ohio is still looked upon by some outsiders as a slow-moving, culturally challenged Rust Belt area, an image that ArtsinStark is working hard to change. The genesis of that transformation is the 20/20 Vision project, an ambitious 10-year project combining arts and economic development in Canton and the surrounding region, with the ultimate aim of shaping areas like education, business, tourism and ...

NOTE: Stark County HIV Testing Locations are listed at the bottom of this article. The history of HIV reads something like a conspiracy thriller, complete with a “patient zero” and rampant theories of government involvement. Although the virus has probably been carried by humans for nearly a hundred years, the first real reporting of it was only in 1981. Misinformation was everywhere surrounding the spread and effect of the virus, and the truth was hard to find. Even now, with AIDS awareness programs and information technology at an all-time high, there are a lot of misconceptions an...

Want a story that makes you feel better about yourself? Here it is. Huffing compressed air like a grizzly in heat is lots of fun; just ask the two women arrested recently for doing it. In June a woman was arrested after reportedly inhaling a can of cleaner while driving. She passed out and crashed into a front yard in the 400 block of Taggart Ave. NE. A child in the backseat was not injured. She later admitted she was addicted to the substance. Another woman was arrested for the same thing on Sunday. She walked into Marc’s, took a can of the duster, went into the bathroom and proceed...

Fire Breathing Bear are five guys from Stark County who play hard rock. They’ve all been in a shitload of bands, and I hope they stick with this one. Their Myspace says they dropped their old singer for this new one (Eric Frank), which was a great move. Vocals are extremely strong here, reminiscent of Tool and ‘90s Ozzy but totally their own. Heavy guitar abounds, of course. “Ultimate Octopus” is the highlight of the album. The main riff is so simple but catchy, and the vocals really stand out by acquiring a soulful lift in the chorus; ethereal and rad as hell. The album ends with a...
Censorship be damned, here’s to a month with meaning October is National Anti-Censorship Month (and Banned Book month) and several Stark County organizations have banded together to bring you a series of events on artistic license and responsibility. With these events comes the hope for a dialogue, a discussion of the freedom that art brings, but also the grave accountability that comes with that freedom. Uncensored National Juried Show Kicking off the month-long extravaganza sanctioning the unsanctioned is Anderson Creative. They will present their first national juried show, UN...
Downtown Canton, has for the last few years been undergoing a revitalization effort centered around the arts. It began with the designation of an arts district within a section of downtown. During the last few years, public art and artists studios and galleries have been popping up all over the downtown area. As we watch progress march forward, some questions arise. How can artist’s individual or collective efforts continue to make a difference in the growth Canton’s local art scene? (Or Stark County for that matter?) Which is more important for a community wide transform...
